 Bio

Clinical Education Background

 

Dr. Cohen is clinically trained as a researcher from Pacifica Graduate Institute and Walden University. He has experience as a film/video editor for Avid and Final Cut Pro in Burbank, California. His experience includes “A” list work in Hollywood with significant people in the film world before turning back to psychology to complete his doctorate in clinical psychology. He has a doctorate in clinical psychology and published numerous articles and academic journals. He speaks in public on virtual reality, and digital storytelling. He is also on the board of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association’s nonprofit foundation. His clinical experience involves working with people of several populations including community mental health, hospital settings, and private practice. He is also a student of Somatic Experiencing which plays a role in his theory of film editing and teaching trauma. 

 

Publication Background

Dr. Cohen is also the author and co-editor of a book called Video and Filmmaking as Psychotherapy: Research and Practice, published by Routledge in 2015 which has reached almost 100 libraries across the world. As a guest lecturer at the University of Southern California (USC), Dr. Cohen has experience introducing this material to students in the social work department. The book is the first of its kind, proposing to make films as a part of psychotherapy in a comprehensive academic book. It is also in the national library of medicine. In the 15 chapters, sources came from authors associated with Psychology, Counseling, Anthropology, Social Work, and Art Therapy. One chapter is written about military trauma that is in a clinical trial about the therapeutic use of film by the grandson of George Patton Jr and his multi-day filmmaking workshops used to treat service-related stress. Background of his company

Dr. Cohen works in the field of mental health education with clients, groups, and colleagues from around the world and is now studying for licensure to be a clinical psychologist. 

 

Dr. Cohen has extensive experience doing public speaking. He had presented his knowledge at conferences in the US and Canada, as well as hospital settings. He has made public speeches at addiction treatment facilities, universities, and webinars on topics such as addiction and trauma. During his presentation at an addiction treatment facility in 2016, Dr. Cohen introduced relax VR, soon to become one of the top 10 apps on the Google Daydream and now available on Android, Daydream View, Samsung Gear VR, iOS, and Pico Goblin.

Film and Undergraduate education Background

Dr. Cohen graduated from Colorado College where he graduated with a degree in film and anthropology and  he wrote his thesis on using films as part of a healing process. He hosted a seminar at Colorado College for Gary Solomon on Cinematherapy tm and later interviewed  filmmakers for his thesis such as Doug PrayEb LottimerNeal Baer,  Andrew Mudge, and Marc Webb.  While filming a documentary based on his thesis. Josh’s unofficial film/video  background began in childhood but his work at KRDO as an intern in 1997 helped establish some of his professional skills and experience with film and it’s connection to psychology. Other experiences with film in the next few years also contributed to his psychological lens of looking at film. While at CC he also worked on Dee Sneider’s Strangeland.  He trained at Video Symphony later on to learn about the Avid and Final Cut Pro. After working on Student films and training Josh and Doug Pray collaborated on a short video about the Dalai Lama and technology in 2001 and was shown at LAFCPUG on October 22,  2003 At the same time, he met Martin Cohen who introduced him to Patrick Swayze where he worked as an assistant (uncredited) for One Last Dance, then called Without a Word. Further work in Hollywood included help on films such as Anna May Wong, Frosted Yellow Willows: Her Life, Times and Legend  (uncredited) by Elaine Mae Woo on AnnaMae Wong . He also worked with Karen Grosso, on films for the Ronald McDonald House (uncredited). In addition he worked for Andrew Van Slee at Extraordinary films raising money for and assisting John Rosenberg with editing for Net Games. (uncredited). Josh then Married Mary Kocman from CC in in Santa Ana in 2005. Josh also gained a Master’s degree in General Psychology from Walden University in 2007 and continued his research on the healing power of film. Mary works at PVLD and helped with interlibrary loans and assisted with library resources for the thesis. In 2009 Josh started his practicum for his doctoral program at TTC (Tarzana Treatment Center). He finished his Practicum hours and his internship at Families in New Directions. In 2009, during his practicum supervision, he was honored to lecture on a client while James Hillman made commentaries on his work. Dr. Hillman was the author of Revisioning Psychology was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, for his work.
